Things get understandably awkward after Spock knocks up David on Genesis, but that doesn't explain why McCoy is so mad. David just wishes this miracle of life business doesn't interfer with getting together with Saavik.

Spock’s eyes narrowed as he sat down across from him. “Then what would be the purpose of playing?"
McCoy shrugged. “Perhaps we could make it more interesting, then?"

The Sixth Installment in The Bonded Souls Series. Spock and McCoy invite the bridge crew to a barbeque at their house. While Spock and McCoy prepare for visitors and celebrate their union, the rest of the crew contemplate their coming out that happened a year before.
Cadet McCoy believed Professor Spock was out to get him due to him always giving him such a hard time. To "get him off his ass" he asked his friend Nyota for help. "This is a hand gesture in Vulcan. It means that you aren't intimidated by him. This should get him to leave you alone." Too bad the gesture for that and to show sexual interest were strikingly similar.
In which Jim plays matchmaker and should avoid putting lyrics on Valentine's Day cards in his friend's name.

They are all children still, really, and they are led by Jim Kirk, the youngest Captain in charge of the youngest crew in Starfleet history, and they are right on the front lines of a war that doesn’t exist.
McCoy is starting to realize that in military terms “youngest” actually means “most expendable.”
OR: McCoy is grumpy, Spock has a death wish, and Jim is busy saving the world.
"Goddamit! Is it really that obvious that I'm in love with the hobgoblin? I thought I was doing good at hiding it. I figured since you (Jim) never said anything, you didn't know. Now I'm all paranoid wondering if he knows." This was one of those 'he's standing right behind me, isn't he?' moments.
McCoy was not too happy about being dragged to Starfleet's New Year's party. He wanted nothing to do with the dancing, the countdowns, the kisses or anything else. Little did he know, this was going to be a New Year's to remember.
